How Inkjet Printers Work
Although there are many versions of inkjet printers, they all share some basic methods. An inkjet printer propels small drops of ink out of nozzles and onto paper in a pattern in order to form an image. Normally, the part of the printer that holds these nozzles, called the print head, will move quickly across the paper, spraying ink. Then the paper will be moved a small distance, and the printer will move across the paper again. These small lines of ink will form the image.

Upon first buying a printer, it will first need to be hooked up to the computer. Most use either a parallel port or a USB port, which should correspond to the proper port on the computer. Once it is plugged in the printer will need to be synched up with the computer, however, most modern operating systems will either do this automatically or provide directions. After the printer is hooked up properly, you should be able to print from any program.
Every so often you will need to replace the print cartridge when the old one runs out of ink. These cartridges vary from printer to printer, so you should be careful to buy the one that fits your model. Installation should be very easy and instructions should be included in the owner’s manual.
Pros And Cons Of Inkjet Printers
Inkjet printers have several advantages over other printing technologies. They are quieter and cheaper to operate, and have lower startup times than most. The printers themselves are also often cheaper than other styles. Many can create very high quality images, which many other printers cannot do.
Unfortunately, inkjet printers often have trouble creating these higher quality images unless provided with specially treated paper, which is often very expensive. The ink cartridges can also be very expensive, and are often incompatible with other printer models. Inkjet printer heads are sometimes flimsy and prone to clogging. Lastly, the ink used by most private inkjet printers is water soluble, and can be severely marred by even the smallest amounts of water. Even highlighter markers can blur the images.
